We finally made it through 2020! We are looking forward to a fresh new beginning more this year than we can ever remember! What better way to ring in the new year than with a home refresh to revitalize your spirit.
We’ve spent so much time in our homes this past year that 2021 design trends are largely influenced by what we feel will bring us more joy, comfort, and functionality in the year ahead.
Multipurpose Spaces
For many of us, our homes have taken on new roles (in addition to where we eat, sleep, and live). We have transformed our homes into workplaces, schools, gyms, and if you’re like us- probably a little bit of a playground as well.
With all of these “worlds” melded together, it can feel unsustainable, disorganized, and difficult to focus. Although we would LOVE to have the room to create a separate space for all of these purposes, for many of us, it is just not possible. Parameters like available floor space, budget, and time can all factor in to what you are able to change in your existing home to better suit this new lifestyle.
We have been helping many of our clients to reimagine spaces to be more functional as multipurpose rooms. Guest bedrooms may become combination office/bedrooms. Living rooms may include a separate study nook. Basements may turn into into play and exercise areas. Ideally, we would love to have these rooms divided by their purpose so that each “function” can feel separate from the other(s).
One of the easiest ways to define an area in a room is to use area rugs. For example, in your guest bedroom, perhaps you can include a rug under your bed to define the “sleep area” away from your desk or workspace (and perhaps another one under your desk and chair, space permitting). Rugs help to separate these functions both physically as well as visually. That way, you won’t feel like you’re working where you sleep, and sleeping where you work.
When separating spaces isn’t possible (it happens!), multifunctional furniture is here to help. Using your living room as a temporary workspace? Perhaps a coffee table with a pop-up work surface and storage for your office supplies would be useful!
If you need some extra tables for the family working/Zooming/snacking throughout the day, grouped tables work beautifully as a coffee table and can easily separate around the room to spread out extra surface space. They come in all shapes and sizes, and you can get creative customizing what works best for you!
